Cromet 88. Vent

Mas que ha demanat ajuda.. life is a chat room Life is a chat room The other day, when visiting Suso de Toro’s webpage, I read in one of his bottles thrown in the sea (this is what he calls his articles) that people have now found in chat rooms the dialog they lack in real life. The author indicates that paradoxically, this shows a failure to communicate outside the Internet. This situation (which is new to us, but has been going on for 10 years already in places like the USA) gives us cause for reflection.
Are there places around us where we could carry a peaceful conversation like the ones our parents and grandparents had? Let’s see. They exist on paper. There is even a wider selection of bars, clubs and all sorts of places that people could go to than before. What has changed then? What have people found in the multiplicity of chat rooms that exists in the Internet? The answer is easy: the possibility to choose, decide who to speak with, and about what at any given time: morning, noon, afternoon and night. Years ago, when work hours were not as flexible and men and women did not share the same conversations, people used their spare time to exchange opinions, complaints, and secrets in specific places: men at the café, and women at the marketplace, streets, and roofs. These conversations made them feel they were part of the world around them. With the massive invasion of the media, mainly television, this situation changed and people were left without their stage. Conversations diminished along with the opportunities to express their moods. The telephone also contributed to this reduction in interpersonal communication. What a paradox, right? Yes, letters which used to be the other form of intimate expression, died also. With the arrival of the Internet, which used to appear distant and inaccessible to people with no computer skills, things started changing, and ironically have gone back to the way they used to be. Well, not exactly the way they used to be because people are not the same. The massive introduction of women in the work place, and their liberation from the servitude to the household obligations has caused a crisis in interpersonal relations. Neither men nor women are the way they used to be. The concept of traditional family has become unstable and this chaos has caused a general confusion that in time will lead to a more open and equal model of society. In the meantime, people need a place to discuss their concerns. And this is what we see everyday in the chat rooms. People pour their joys, sorrows, doubts, dreams, laughter, interests and fears. Men and women, without segregation. And, fortunately is not done separately. The actors on this stage belong to both sexes, and for the first time in history, they have been able to meet face to face without masks –even though many claim everyone lies. Lying, which happens often but not all the time, is what has allowed us to play and rethink life while talking to an unknown individual. Chat rooms made it possible for men and women to meet equally, and to learn from one another without concern for physical appearance being able to speak their minds. This task that could be called educational or social is comparable to the roll that schools used to play. Is the Internet the new school of the XXI century? The answer is yes if it prepares people for real life and allows each person to express their true self. People learn to be more understanding, educated, humble, loving, open, seeking, and any other adjective that we may want to add, and they then learn to apply these qualities in real life. Let’s not take into consideration any negative effects like the possibility of someone being hooked to the Internet 24 hours a day unable to finish school or looking for a job, only finding meaning on this stage. But this does not invalidate the fact that the scale sides with the positive effects. Chat rooms have allowed the game of life, and its ability to carry on without differences. They have empowered people to use words again, in real time or via e-mail. Ultimately, they have brought meaning to our innate ways to create in this world using the word. written by mas cafe blues translator: aigua |
